SOLAR ECLIPSE 2017: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

The first question that always comes to mind when we hear about the upcoming eclipse is ‘Where can I see it?’ While Connecticut will only be getting a partial eclipse there will still be plenty for us to see on Monday.

REMEMBER! YOU MUST ALWAYS USE EYE PROTECTION TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE!

The only way to look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun; they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight.

  • solar-eclipse_46Always inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched or damaged, discard it. read and follow any instructions printed on or packaged with the filter.
  • Always supervise children using solar filters.
  • Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun. After looking at the sun, turn away and remove your filter — do not remove it while looking at the sun.
  • Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical device.
  • Similarly, do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.
  • Seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, a telescope, binoculars or any other optical device. Note that solar filters must be attached to the front of any telescope, binoculars, camera lens, or other optics.
  • If you have any pets that go outside keep them inside during the eclipse so not to damage their eyes.

How is a partial solar eclipse different from a total solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon gets between the Earth and the sun and the moon casts a shadow over the Earth. A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of ‘new moon’ when the moon passes directly between the sun and the Earth. There are three kinds of solar eclipses: total, partial and annular. There is also a rare hybrid that is a combination of an annular and a total eclipse.

Annular Eclipse: an eclipse of the sun in which the edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon.

 

Why is everyone making the solar eclipse a big deal?

Well, the last time a solar eclipse was visible over the US was in 1979. It was a total eclipse and occurred on February 26, 1979. Its path passed through the northwestern  U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. After the August 2017 total solar eclipse, the next annular solar eclipse that can be seen in the continental United States will be on October 14, 2023 which will be visible from Northern California to Florida. Following this, we will have a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 visible from Texas to Maine.
